The
first thing I want to talk about is the struggle I have had with work. As mentioned, a head injury in 2004 has left me
with problems that are not visible. A company that I worked for in the beginning
of my HR career knew about the problems I suffered with - I told them at the
interview stage - and they still hired me.
As anyone would when you start a new job I made mistakes. The only
problem is that for me I need to make the same mistake more than once to be
able not to make it again. The way I
remember things is to write them down, colour code them and make folders of
different work processes so as to keep my mind on top of the work. However, my manager - who knew the problems I
had - could not accept that I kept making mistakes and eventually I had to
leave.
If
my problems had been taken into account - which they should have been - I would
not have had to leave the company. It is for this reason that I want to help
people with hidden disabilities and mental health issues sustain work and for
companies to realise how important and valuable they are and how to accommodate
these people.
